I have always been a lover of candles for all my adult life. Whatever shape, size, colour, different scents, inexpensive or luxury. I love the way they instantly relax you, beautiful to look at and also the way they create a wonderful ambience that you can instantly pair with the season or occasion. With their upbeat scents during the day and then being able to transport you into a relaxing mood in an evening after a long day’s work.
However, through my own ignorance many years ago, I would happily buy candles mainly for the way they looked and their scent. As long as they looked good and had a nice aroma, I was happy. After a long day’s work, I would light a candle in my kitchen or dining area and I would happily go about my jobs, and then at some point in the evening, relax. The glistening candle on the table set the mood for a cosy night and helped the household chores go faster.
One morning, I was horrified to find two things. The once white walls throughout my house had nearly all turned a nasty grey colour, literally spreading the width and breadth of the house and my family and I had woken up with soot on our noses.
This absolutely terrified me that this could happen. I wasn’t excessive by any means with candles but would light one in an evening for 2/3 hours in an open space, usually the kitchen.
My relationship with candles changed from that day. Once I had literally cleaned and repainted all the house (this is no exaggeration), replaced furniture and threw out all my existing candles I started to do some research. I was amazed this could happen from the candles I was using. I soon found out that the problem wasn’t the candle but the type of candle and more importantly the wax that they contained.
So many candles on the market, both inexpensive or luxury brands use waxes that contain harmful toxins. Waxes such as Paraffin Wax, Mineral Wax (another name for Paraffin Wax). Paraffin Wax is derived from petroleum which is one of the biggest environmental contributors of carbon dioxide. Scarily, it contains up to 11 Carcinogen compounds that are toxic air contaminants, damaging to both our health and the environment. These will leave you with a smoky and sooty flame. Unfortunately, the reasons some brands will use paraffin wax is because it is a cheaper wax and the fragrance is instantly stronger.
Most of the time it can be quite hard to identify the type of wax used for some brands, especially if they are using one of the above waxes. It isn’t clear to see from some packaging, even in the small print, and many times I have had to google the brand to find out the actual type of wax used.
I do find this prospect very concerning and even misleading to many customers. I myself was definitely drawn into the lovely packaging and fragrances of some well-known brands years ago, but in reality, these candles can be quite detrimental to both our health and the environment.
My love of candles hasn’t changed but one thing that has definitely changed is the type of candle wax I will only ever now use.
A 100% perfectly natural wax that is also Vegan. Soy wax was invented in 1996 and is a vegetable wax derived from soybean oil. Soybeans are natural, renewable and biodegradable. It is a clean-burning, non-toxic wax and it burns at lower temperatures so the candles will actually last longer compared to other waxes such as paraffin waxes. These are completely healthy and toxin-free. They are free from petrochemical content, pesticides and herbicides.
Needless to say, when I was creating my own brand which included candles (of course) that these would have to be 100% Natural Soy Wax. Our candles are hand-poured and Made in England and with amazing fragrances to choose from. I am 100% confident that our customers are getting only the finest natural waxes available and we also combine beautiful blends of natural and essential oils which also create a great sense of wellbeing.
It has been very rewarding, on my SOAK BOX England journey to date, to have been able to talk to so many people, customers, retailers, friends and family about the benefits of using Natural Soy Wax candles in their homes. Many people have told me that they are now converted to Soy which is amazing to hear!
